[united press association.] Gisborne, October 2. Very favorable accounts came to hand yesterday from the Southern Cross Petroleum Company. No 3 bore is down 190 feet, and the bore is now passing through a hard close-grained flagstone, said to be usually found about and between oil sands. It is slightly porous, admitting gas and a small quantity of oil to rise. Hitherto the fractured papa rock had been met with, which allows oil and gas to rise freely. Tucker, alias George Henry Marshall, was committed to trial on a charge of bigamy with Emily Harris, at Gisborne, Elizabeth Tucker, sister of accused, deposed to having been present at the Church of England at Bulls, Rangitikei, on which occasion accused was married to Elizabeth Marshall by the Rev. Mr Ballachy. Bail was allowed accused in £4OO and two sureties of £2OO each; but it was nob forthcoming. David Mackay, who came to Poverty Bay in 1834 in a whaling brig, died on Monday last. He was born in 1800, He joined the Navy, and was present at the bombardment of Algiers and the battle of Navarino.
