THE WAR IN SOUDAN.
[REUTERS TELEGRAMS.] By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright. ♦ . FATE OF COLONEL STEWART AND PARTY. TREACHERY OF THE BEDOUINS. SMALL-POX AMONG THE BRITISH TROOPS. A WHOLE BATTALION PLACED IN QUARANTINE. (Received October 8, 0.55 a.m.) Cairo, October 6. Further intelligence regarding the fate of Col. Stewart has been brought in, and shows that Colonel Stewart lost his life through the treachery of the Bedouins. It appears that a party of desert Arabs witnessed the loss of Stewart at Wad El Homar and, when Col. Stewart's party landed, offered to escort them to their destination. Their services were accepted, but, having allayed suspicion by protestations of friendship, the Arabs turned upon those whom they were escorting, and killed Col. Stewart and all who were with him. A case of small-pox has occurred in the Black Watch (Ist Battalion Royal Highlanders), and the whole battalion has been placed iu quarantine. [special to press association.] London, October 3. The Times states that General Lord Wolseley will be summoned to return to London before the end of October. He will be succeeded in Egypt by Ganeral Stephenson. October 5. The Times adheres to the statement published, to the effect that General Lord Wolseley had been recalled.
