i [united press association.] Dunedin, October 7. A private cable message received here states that William Reid, second son of the late Mr Reid, of Reid and Gray, the well-known agricultural implement makers, Dunedin, committed suicide at Sydney by shooting himself. Deceased was of weak mind. Blair's store at North Dunedin was completely gutted this morning. Blair was badly burnt about the face. Insurance—Stock, £2OO, in the Hamburg and Madgeburg; £l5O, in Colonial for the building. Wellington, October 7. At Masterton, Perry and M'Kenna, gold prospectors, were committed for trial on a charge of obtaining money on false pretences. The case arose out of the alleged discovery of gold-hearing reefs near Masterton, and which subsequently turned out to have been salted. A man named Anderson was arrested at Otaki yesterday on a charge of embezzling £240 belonging to the Board of Guardians of Brownlow Hill Workhouse, Liverpool. Accused had about £53 to his credit in the bank in Wellington, and when arrested he was keeping a general store at Otaki, of which he had purchased the goodwill.
The police have cabled news of the arrest to England, and it was expected that a police officer would be sent out at once. Accused had been remanded for seven days. Bail was allowed accased in .£2OO, and two sureties of .£IOO each.
