ANOTHER OUTBREAK OF HOSTILITIES IN TONQUIN. THIRTY FRENCHMEN KILLED OR WOUNDED. A CHINESE SQUADRON COOPERATING WITH THE FRENCH. BOMBARDMENT OF FORMOSAN FORTS, (Received October 6, 0.45 a.m.) Hong-Kong, October 4, Intelligence is received here that Admiral Courbet is attacking Kelung, on the island of Formosa, with the intention of taking possession of the town. A strong resistance is being offered by the Chinese troops, and a sharp engagement has been fought, resulting in favor of the French, who have occupied two positions. The French loss is reported as eighteen killed and wounded; that of the Chinese amounts to 200. (Received October 6, 12.45 p.m.) Evening. A fresh outbreak of hostilities has occurred between the French and Chinese in Tonquiu. The Chinese troops stationed between Bal Ha and Langson were observed to be advancing, and a French gunboat on the Long Koi proceeded to reconnoitre them. The attacking party landed, and severe fighting ensued, in which the French sustained a loss of thirty killed or wounded. Admiral Lespes, commander of a China squadron now cooperating with Admiral Courbett and with a portion of the French fleet, is attacking Titnsui, in Formosa. On completion of the bombardment Lespes will occupy the port.
