A portion of a human kneebone, with a large piece of skin attached, was picked up on the Paikakariki beach on Friday last. It is believed to belong to one of the Lastinghara victims. A deputation from the New Zealand Ptifle Associalion will wait on the Minister for Defence to-morrow to urge the Government not to divide the proposed vote in aid of volunteer prize firing. Thomas Bracken has commenced a series of lectures here. It is reported to be his intention, if the lectures are found to take well, to make a lecturing tour round the world.

Wanganui, October 1. The Supreme Court was again occupied the whole day with the libel action. Mr Izard, for the plaintiff, called a number of witnesses who spoke highly of plaintiffs moral character.

News has been received from Wairoa of the death of three native children by burning at a place called Whakaki, on Sunday night. A party of fifteen were holding a tangi over the body of an old woman, and went to sleep. The whares caught fire and the children were burnt to death before they could be rescued.

Auckland, October 1

David Alexander Evans (or Hopkins), who recently attempted suicide by cutting his throat at Durand's boarding-house, Wyndham street, died last night at the hospital of his injuries.
