Nelson, September 20. A woman named Mercer who kept the Traveller's Rest Hotel, at Appleby, was killed on the railway line at 9.20 this morning. The down train from Belgrove was nearing a railway crossing, and when the engine was within a fow yards of it, the unfortunate woman attempted to cross the line, the result being that she was struck by the engine and killed instantaneously. An inquest will be held.

Blenheim, September 20. Joseph Kirkwood, a single man, aged 28, was killed on the Dashwood Pass contract yesterday by a fall of earth. Deceased and a mate named Graham came from the North Island a month ago, and took a sub-con tract for excavating. He was an experienced man in such work. An inquest will be held.

"Wellington, September 21. Most of the crew of the ill-fated ship Lastingham have now been provided for. Three have gone home in the Florida; two have gone to join friends inDunedin; one has shipped on the Zealandia, and another on the Peter Stuart; and the boy has gone on a farm. All were fully provided for before leaving. Six men, including the chief officer, are still in Wellington.
