Wellington, September 11. A verdict of accidental death was returned at the inquest on Joshua Bird, killed while blasting. It is stated that the Governor will shortly deliver a lecture before the Wellington Philosophical Society on the defence of the colony. The purchaser of the hull and cargo of the ill-fated ship Lastingharn intends forming a joint stock company, with a capital of £2,000 in £lO shares. A representative of the proposed Company left for the scene of the wreck to-day. It is understood that the Companies forming the Marine Insurance Association agreed to pay all claims against them in connection with the loss of the Lastingharn to-morrow. Christchurch, September 11.
In December last, a lad 13 years of age, named Edward Cox, working at Birchhill station, Ashley, left home with an old man named Treuers, without the consent of his parents. He was seen at Kaikoura, but though the police made inquiries all over the colony, nothing was heard of him until last week, when Travers who enticed the boy away, was arrested for horse stealing at Ahanra, West Coast. It is stated the boy was living at the house of one MacDonald. His parents who despaired of seeing him again were in-
formed, and instructions have been sent to the Ahaura police to send the boy to Christchurch.
