OCCUPATION BY THE FRENCH,
(Received September 12, 1.10 a.in.) Naples, September 10, Evening. The cholera epidemic continues to rage in this city with unabated vigour. A few cases have also occurred at Rome, and fears are entertained that the disease may increase, notwithstanding the precautions which are being taken.
Madrid, September 10. Further cases of cholera have occurred in this country, and the disease is reported to be spreading. Berlin, September 10. The Emperor William will leave this city for Warsaw on Sunday next, with the intention, it is understood, of meeting the Czar and the Emperor of Austria there.
London, September 10. Per Merchant Shipping and Underwriter’s Association :—Arrived, the ship Auriga, from Timaru, June 3rd. (Received September 12, 12.50 p.m.)
September 11. At the instance of the Spanish Government parleying has been renewed with the view of a conclusion of the Anglo-Spanish commercial treaty.
Cairo, September 11. Intelligence is received that a battle was recently fought at Ambugal, near Doogola, between Egyptian troops, under the Mudir, and a large body of rebels, led by two of the Mahdi chief ameers. The engagement lasted some time, and resulted in the defeat of the rebels, who were utterly routed, and suffered a severe loss in killed and wounded.
The Highland brigade now stationed in this city has received orders to proceed to various points on the Nile, to reinforce garrisons.
General Lord Wolseley is remaining here for the present, directing the movements of the troops. Paris, September 11. News to hand from Madagascar states that the French, fleet under Admiral Milofc, has bombarded Mahanores. The Malagasy gaarison fled and the place is now in the occupation of the French.
