FALSE DECLARATION OF MARRIAGE.
The following circular has been forwarded to the Registrar of Marriages, Kumara (J. M'Ennis, Esq.), from the Registrar-General’s Office at Wellington, in the hope that publicity may be given to the consequences which anyone is liable to for making false declarations under the Marriage Act; — Sir—l send you herewith a note of the issue of two trials for false declaration under the Marriage Act, being cases in which Government, though not prosecuting, rendered assistance. Several cases of false declaration have been brought under my notice lately, and I am desirous that as much publicity as possible should be given to the fact that two convictions (with severe punishment) have been obtained.
“In the Supreme Court at Wellington, on the 9th July, 1884, Charles Henry Monkton was sentenced to imprisonment with hard labour for a period of two years, for making a false declaration under the Marriage Act to procure his marriage with Emma Howell, a minor. “ On the day following Alice Lynch was sentenced to imprisonment for a terms of IS montbs for also making a false declaration under the Marriage Act to procave the marriage of Charles Henry Monkton to Emma Howell, a minor.”
