At their meeting last night the Borough Council, by the casting vote of the Mayor, struck a rate of 6d in the £ for the general purposes of the borough. The rate will be payable in one sum on the Ist October.
Sittings of the R.M. and Warden’s Courts were held to-day. Reports will be given to-morrow.
In the Legislative Council yesterday, the Hon. P. A. Buckley informed the Council of his appointment as Colonial Secretary, and said that he proposed tomorrow to state generally the intentions of the Government. The Times’ correspondent, telegraphing yesterday, states : “It is not known who is to be the new Minister of Mines, though the name of Mr R. J. Seddon, the member for Kumara, has been mentioned in connection with that office. Mr A. J. Cadman, the member for Coromandel, is also spoken of as a possible accession to the Ministry.” His Honor Judge Broad who has been holding a sitting of the District Court at Hokitika, arrived here to-day, at one o’clock. He proceeded by the afternoon tram to Groymouth, where on Monday next, he will hold a sitting of the District Court for civil cases, one of which, we understand, will be relative to the late buggy accident at the Zigzag. At the request of the Secretary of the Hospital Committee, we. republish the receipts recorded at the last Committee meeting :
£254 15 6 It is thought that the Jew hawker, Walter Leditt, whose charred remains were discovered after the destruction of Festers’ Hotel, Lincoln road, Christchurch, by fire yesterday morning, would be the same man who was for some time in the employ of Mr S. S. Pollock, in this town. His real name was Walter Levette.
Commander Edwin wired at 1.50 p.m. to-day:—“lndications of frost, or very cold to-dight.” The ground and plant, or the plant alone, in the claim known as Palmer and party’s, at Dunedin Flat, is for sale, and tenders for the same will be received till Thursday, the 11th insi, addressed to Mr J. Palmer, at Davidson Bros.
Van Klaus Hasselaer has arrived, and will hold a Dutch auction of crockery, &c., in Mr S. S. Pollock’s store in Main street, this and to-morrow nights.
The National Bank and the Bank of New Zealand will open offices at Lyell to-morrow for the transaction of general banking business.
