[united press association.] Wellington, August 22. A southerly buster set in to-day accompanied with heavy showers, hail and sleet. A heavy hail storm passed over Carterton to-day and nothing occurred like it before, the country was completelv covered in places inches deep. Dunedin, August 20. John M'Milian, of North Taieri, died from tetanus, which supervened upon a wound in his right eve. He was driving a horse out of the paddock in the dark, and ran against a post, a splinter from which penetrated his eve. An old settler named John Tobin was found dead in a creek at Kaitangata yesterday.
It is stated that Dr. Parry, who has served a sentence for the Kaitangata manslaughter business, has received a Government appointment in Victoria, the Medical Association having bestirred themselves in his interest. Bluff, August 20. The smartest shock of earthquake ever experienced here was felt at ten minutes to one this afternoon. A heavy report was first heard, resembling the explosion of heavy charges of dynamite ; then a distant rumbling, accompanied by a severe shock. The vibrations were distinctly felt by persons in the street.
