MEETING AND MEASURES OF WEST COAST MEMBERS.
The Parliaceentary correspondent of the Argus telegraphed last evening, as follows:
At a meeting of the West Coast members held to-day, Mr Seddon in the chair, all were unanimous in bringing before the goldfields members of the colony, and afterwards, with their co-operation, before the Government and the Legislature, the following measures conducive to the interest of gold-mining : 1. Removal of Wardens triennially. 2. Assistance to prospecting by a system of payment by results. 3. Rewards for the discovery of new goldfields within any distance, amount to be regulated by the value of the discovery. 4. Reduction of the charge for miners’ rights, or alternative of making the rights issuable quarterly. 5. Maintenance of main trunk roads . Nelson to Okarito and Brighton—by the colony. 6. Abolition of gold duty. 7. Election of the County Chairmen by County elector’s. 8. Surveys to map workings and leads in each district, and keep record of maps in Warden’s office available to public. 9. That Prof. Ulrich make periodical visits to goldfields, and lecture when requested. 10. Customs duty off mining baize, ♦ [united press association.] Wellington, August 20. Replying to Seddon, Montgomery said that Government had intended to bring down a Bill to amend the Westland Education District Subdivision Act.
The following motions were earned ; Return of existing endowment for secondary and university education in the colony (Seddon). Seddon moved that Hansard should be sent free to County Councils, Borough Councils, and Road Boards. Hursthonse moved as an amendment that it be abolished altogether. For the amendment, 12 ; against, 72. 0 Conor moved as further amendment that the charge be made to cover the cost of printing, binding, &c. Carried on the voices. Fulton moved as a farther amendment that the free list be abolished, with the exception of one copy to each member. Question put that the amendment stand part of the question—Ayes, 31; Noes, 43. The original motion as amended was then put and carried.
