WESTLAND COUNTY COUNCIL.

The Council met at half-past two p.m., in the Chambers, Hokitika; present—Messrs Hirter, Gumming, Grimmond, Hose, Jack, M'Whirter, and M'Goldrick. In the absence of the Chairman, Mr Hirter was, on the motion of Mr M'Goldrick, seconded by Mr Rose, voted to the chair. Proceedings in reference to this ridiDg are extracted from the West Coast Times report, as follows: CORRESPONDENCE. Letter from Messrs Cassidy, Binnie and Co., stating that the road from Dillman's Town to Harris's, miles, was almost impassable, and that the journey now occupied the mail coach 45 minutes longer than formerly ; also that the road had been destroyed by the Government contractors carting along it heavy timber for the Taipo bridge.—Received. Mr Jack suggested that as the Government contractors had destroyed the road, the matter be referred to Messrs Bevan and SeddoD. Mr Rose said it was a county road, and the Council ought to keep it in repair. Mr Jack said in other places main roads were maintained by the Government entirely. Mr Gumming did not object to getting the Government "on the soft." He saw no . objection to adopting Mr Jack's suggestion. Mr M'Whirter said the Government were not cutting up the road. The far end of it was not in such bad repair. Perhaps the horses might be in fault, and might be looked after by the complainants.—The matter then dropped. Letter from Mr A. M. Eyes, forwarding an account of £5, for services as Clerk to the Arahura Licensing Committee.—Received, and to be considered with resolution to the subject. REPORTS. Several reports were read and received including reports from the. engineer and overseers. TENDERS. Tenders for various works were opened and dealt with, the lowest being in each case accepted. - dillman's road. Mr M'Whirter moved, "That tenders be invited for widening sections 1 and 2, Dillman's Town to Christchurch road. By adopting this resolution a good deal of money would be saved. If the road were widened deep ruts would be avoided.—Mr Grimmond seconded. His idea was that narrow roads would not do for heavy traffic. He would not pledge himself to vote for accepting too high a tender. Mr M'Goldrick said plans for this work had been sent to the Government ander the Roads and Bridges Construction Act. If the money could be got from the Government all the better. Mr Rose said our narrow roads were very little good. Our roads ought to be afc least twelve feet.—The motion was carried on the voices. county rate. Mr M'Whirter moved, "That ifc'be publicly notified that it is the intention of the Council to make and levy a General rate of three-halfpence in the £, on the rateable value of property in 'the county; said rate to be made on September 10th, 1884 : to be for the year ended 31st March, 1885, and to be payable in one sum on the loth September. 1884,"—Carried.
