SMALL-POX IN THE SOUTH
Invercargill, August 9. A case of stnall-pox has occurred here. The sufferer is a child two years old who arrived from the north per Te Anau, at the Bluff, two weeks a»o. She remained there till Thursday last, when her mother observing suspicious symptom brought the child bv train to Invercargill Hospital. The doctor was suspicious at first, and kept the child in the fever ward at the rear of the main building. At a special meeting of the Council at noon to-day, it was stated that three doctors had seen the child, and all agreed that the case was one of small-pox. A committee was appointed to secure a house three or four mile 3 from the town, so as to completely isolate any cases which may occur. The doctors believe that the disease was contracted aboard the Te Anaii, as the child has not been out of the colony, only having come from Port Chalmers to the Bluff. The name is believed to be Anning. The father is a seafaring man. The child was ashore playing about the Bluff some days before the disease appeared.
August 11. Small-pox is reported to have broken out at Carey's Bay, where the parents of the girl Anning lived. The girl Anning was attacked with small-pox shortly after her arrival at Invercargill.
