FOOD SUPPLY ON GOLDFIELDS.
Accompanying the report on the goldfielda are a number of interesting tables, one of which gives the average prices of provisions and live stock in the various mining districts in NewZealand. The differences are in many cases so great that a comparison forms an interesting study. The price of beer varies from 80s a hhd. at Mount Ida, to 150 s at Lyell and Pelorns Sound ; brandy runs from 24s to 365. In wheaten bread there are preat differences, the price varying from I'd per lb. at Tuapeka, to 5d per lb. at (/olHnir. wood ; while flour is nnlv lO* 0.-I per i .;■:. it :> i'-i-s al Lyell :w!--.! l.orned cattle varies considerably, the lowest being £3 9s, and the highest £lO to £ls at Kumara. In sheep the difference is even greater, the prices running from 4s at Alexandra to 40s at Orepuki. After stating these differences, it is not to be expected but that the price of meat will also vary. Beef is as low as 3d at Tuapeka, while it, reaches Sd at Hokitika and Lianaahna. varies from 2d a quart to 9d, and salt from ljd to 6d, tobacco from 5s 6d to Bs, and -wine from 15s a gallon to 40s.
