LATEST BRITISH AND FOREIGN INTELLIGENCE.
[REUTER’S TELEGRAMS.] By Electric Telegraph —Copyright. >—< THE REPORTED CAPTURE OF KELUNG BY FRANCE. FRANCO-CHINESE PARLEYING STILL CONTINUED. THE PROPOSED BRITISH EXPEDITION TO KHARTOUM. ABANDONMENT OP PROPOSED RAILWAY TO BERBER. RENEWAL OF ANTI-CLERICAL RIOTS IN BELGIUM. DRENCHING THE MOB WITH WATER (Received August 9, 1.10 a.m.) London, August 8. In the House of Commons last night, Lord Edmond Fitzmaurice stated, in reply to a question, that the reported seizure by Admiral Courbet of the harbour and coal mines at Kelung, in the island of Formosa, was untrue. There had not, he added, been any rupture of Frauco-Chinese negotiations for the settlement of the Langson affair, and parleying is still proceeding. (Received August 9, 2.20 p.m.) Evening. It has transpired that if the expedition to Khartoum is decided upon, the force will proceed via Dongola, and not by way of Souakim, as originally stated. The proposed railway from the latter place to Berber has been abandoned.
(Received August 9, 1.10 a.m.) Brussels, August 7. A renewal of the anti-Clerical riots occurred here to-day on account of bills introduced by the Clerical members of the Ministry. The approaches to the Chambers were guarded, and the Civic Fire Brigade, which was called out to assist the police, turned their hose on the mob and deluged the crowd with water. [special to press association.] London, August 3. Lord Dufferin will succeed the Marquis of Ripon as Viceroy and GovernorGeneral of India. There is little hope that the Tories will permit the passage of the Federation Enabling Bill. El Mahdi has ordered a body of 50,000 strong to reinforce Osman Digna.
