LOCAL SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

The monthly meeting of the Local School Committee was held in the Town Hall on the 4th inst.; present— The Chairman (Mr R. J. Seddon), Messrs P. Barrowman, T. Cain, G. Voysey, and A. C. Campbell (Hon. Sec.).

The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed.

The outward correspondence was read and approved of \ and the inward read, and received and considered.

The following letter from residents at or near Rangiriri was read ; The Chairman Kumara School Com-

mittee. Sir—On behalf of the parents of children resident at Christchurch Road, I would respectfully request that you will see your way clear to open the Rangiriri School as soon as possible, by appointing a teacher thereto. I need hardly inform you that the children at this season of the year are running about idle, and, worst of all, uneducated. Should you favour us by the appointment of a teacher, we will give every assistance possible to enable such teacher to perform the duties appertaining to the office, and offer such reasonable ' inducements to keep the school open as lie in our power. I have the honor to be, sir, Yours respectfully, J. CUNNtFFE, . , Por self and others. Christchurch Road, August 2, 1884.

The Chairman reported having ordered school requisites and repairs to water-tanks at the Kumara School, which was approved of.

A letter was received from Master William Yoysey, pupil teacher at the State School stating that it was his intention to present himself as a candidate for examination in Class E at the next annual examination of teachers in Westland, and applying for a testimonial as to character, for the Education Department in Wellington, snch being a necessary preliminary step. The request was complied with, and an excellent character given.

Three months’ leave of absence granted to the Chairman concluded the D , busines of the meeting.
