[REUTERS TELEGRAMS.] By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright. ATTEMPT AT ESCAPE FROM PENTRIDGE STOCKADE. VICTORIAN LAND BILL. (Received August 6, 1.40 a.in.) Melbourne, August 5. Sailed, this afternoon, the Union steamship Te Anau, for the Bluff. A prisoner confined in Pentridge Stockade made an unsuccessful attempt at escape to-day, and lost his life. He was observed by warders, who fired upon him and killed him. (Received August 6, 1 p.m.) Sydney, August 6. Arrived, yesterday, the Wakatipu, from Wellington. The Legislative Assembly has been sitting the whole night discussing the Land Bill. On the motion for the third reading, the debate still (10 a.m.) continues.
