Wellington, July 8,

The following tenders were received foi the Westland Hospital, Hokitika, contract, additional wards, painting, &c.;—Accepted ; W. C. Goodfellow, Hokitika, £486. Declined; Arnett and Seabrook, Greymouth, £497 : J. and R. Cooper, Hokitika, £5lB ; Duncan M'Gregor, Hokitika, £522 ; Cooke and M'Donald, Hokitika, £592. At the Supreme Court to-day, Albert Kemp, mate of the English barque Hudson, was charged with refusing to assist a police constable who was arresting some disorderly sailors on board the Hudson. The jury found the accused guilty with a strong recommendation to mercy, on the grounds of being his first offence. The jury also expressed the opinion that the constable should have asked for the officer on board. His Honour said that in his opinion defendant was gnilty of a serious breach of duty, both as the Queen’s subject and an officer of the ship. It was absolutely necessary to make the case one of very severe censure in a Court of Justice, and the judgment was that the defendant forfeit £2O to her Majesty forthwith, and in default of payment be imprisoned for one calender month unless the fine be sooner paid.

Thames, July 8, A fatal accident occurred to-day at Totara Point, a lad, named Charles Robinson, employed by the contractors for the Thames-Kopu railway, being jammed between a waggon and the the back, and horribly crushed to death.
