(Received July 4, 1.30 p.m.) Melbourne, July 4. The debate on the resolutions of the Sydney Convention was resumed in the Legislative Assembly last evening, tnd the discussion continued till midnight, when Mr Broom moved an adjournment. The Government absolutely refused to agree to this, and
the House divided with the result that the motion was negatived by 51 to 11. Gaunson, Graves and others then pursued “ stonewall ” tactics and the House continued sitting till five o’clock this morning, when the opposition collapsed, and the resolutions were put and carried. There is an increasing belief that the disease now prevalent here is smallpox, though medical men are still unable to decide definitely on the point. Mr Berry, as Postmaster-General, has ordered the detention of letters addressed to the advertiser of a sweep on the Melbourne Cup, whose advertisement is published as from Dunedin.
