CHESS TOURNAMENT.

At the meeting of chessplayers at Rugg’s Hotel on Saturday evening last, it was found that there were a sufficient number of entries to open the proposed tournament. Messrs Janion, Wiesner, Hope, and Sampson were appointed a committee to carry out the arrangements, and to handicap the players. At their meeting on Tuesday, Messrs Janion and Hope declared not to play before handicapping, for lack of time. The players are handicapped as follows : Class I.—Dr. Monckton, Messrs Wiesner, Holst, Ballantyne, and Janion. Class 2.- —MessrsNicholaisen, Thorne, Johnsen, Pierson, and Hope. Class 3,—Messrs Sampson, R. E. Wylde, and Hewitt. Class 4.—Messrs Dennett, Todd, and Kroener. Class s.—Messrs W, Morris and R. Smith. The first class are to give to the second class a knight, to the third a rook, to the fourth a I’ook and two moves, and to the fifth a queen. The second class give to the third class a knight, to the fourth a rook, and to the fifth a rook and two moves. The third class give the fourth class a knight, and to the fifth a rook. The fourth class give to the fifth a knight. Every player is to play every other player, and two games are to be played each week. Drawn games are to be played again till there is a win. The entrance is Is, and the acceptance 2s 6d. The prizes will be three, probably about 20s, 12s 6d, and 7s 6d. They are merely to encourage the game. The rules for play will be posted in the Reading Room, or at Mr Wiesner’s. Play is to commence next week, and further entries made till Saturday at Mr Weisner’s.
