In the House of Commons last night, the Government bill announced by the Hon, Mr Childers, in his Budget statement for the conversion of Consols from 3 per cent, to 2f per cent, was read a second time. Sir Gavan Duffy, who recently was credited with an attempt to revive the Young Ireland party, has disclaimed any intention on his part to re-enter political life. It is reputed on authority that an agreement has been arrived at by Lord Granville and M. Waddington regarding the deportation of recidivistes to New Caledonia. The Chicago Convention has decided to nominate Jas. G. Blaine, ex-Secre-tary of State, as the Democratic candidate for the Presidency of the United States. Cairo, June 8. Intelligence is to hand from Massowah that Admiral Hewett, who is now on a special mission to Abyssinia, has been well received by King John, and there is every prospect of his mission being successful. In consequence of the presence of a large body of Arab rebels under Osman Dignah in the neighborhood of Souakim, further reinforcements, comprising all the British marines available at Port Said, and another battalion of Egyptian regulars, are under orders to proceed there without delay. Intelligence has been received that Berber, an important town on the Nile north of Khartoum, has fallen to the rebels, after a brief struggle, who are now in full occupation. A portion of the Egyptian garrison surrendered their arms and went over to the assailants, and the remainder who declined were killed to a man. (Received June 9, 11.50 a.m.) Capetown, June 8. Latest news from Zululand states that the Usntus have recently made a fresh attack upon the loyal tribes in the Reserve territory. Heavy fighting took place, resulting iu the defeat of the aggressors. A large body of Boers have now joined the Usutus, and together they have invaded the countiy occupied by Usibepn and his followers. [special to press association.] London, Jane 4.
