THE STEAMSHIP AUSTRAL.
The Edinburgh correspondent of the Otago Daily Times writes on April 3, concerning the steamship Austral : This fine ship, whose sinking in Sydney Harbour will be fresh within the recollection of your Leaders, has been thoroughly overhauled since she arrived in the Clyde. Not only have her fittings been renewed in a style of magnificence which makes her second, in this respect, to no ship afloat, but she has also undergone extensive alterations. On March 22 she made a very successful trip, attaining a mean speed of 16| knots, or 19£ miles per hour. She has been chartered by Messrs Henderaon Bros., of the Anchor line, to run on their Transatlantic service as a consort to their monster ship, the City of Rome. On the occasion under notice, Mr A. C. Henderson said he thought there was nothing to equal the Austral so far as accommodatiou was concerned; and her commander, Captain Charleton, expressed it as his opinion that there was no finer ship afloat. It is to be hoped a successful career is now before this noble vessel. She can now carry 250 first-class and 150 second-class passengers on the main deck, and 800 steerage passengers on the lower deck.
