A man named William Mullen Douglas comitted suicide at Helensville by taking strychnine. He had been discharged by his employer for neglecting his duty through drink on Thursday last.

FUGITIVE OFFENDERS. Wellington, June 3. An order under the Fugitive Offenders Act, has just been issued from the Defence Office, the Minister notifying that in all cases where proceedings for the apprehension and surrender of a fugitive under the provisions of the above-mentioned Act are instituted by, or on behalf of any private prosecutor, or where such apprehension and surrender are sought at the instance of a person who is not acting under the authority or by the direction of the Crown, such private prosecutor or person shall alone be responsible for all expenses of, and incidental to such apprehension and surrender; and no claim for any such expenses will be allowed as against Government. It is further notified, however, that in all cases where the assistance of the police is required, they will be instructed to act upon obtaining from any person, or persons requiring such assistance, a guarantee in such form as may be approved by the department, A man named James Weston has been arrested on a charge of criminally assaulting a girl aged 13.
