"Westport, May 9. Daniel O'Neil, fireman, belonging to the steamer Kawatiri, when endeavoring to go on board at 6 o'clock last night, fell from the gangway into the river and was drowned, Deceased was under the influence of liquor. A companion who was with him, was also drunk, and consequently was unable to render any assistance. His body has not yet been found. O'Neil was a native of London, under 23 years of age. He came to Lyttelton in the British King the trip before last, and ran away from her and went harvesting in Canterbury, and subsequently joined the Kawatiri.
Wanganui, May 8. At a meeting of the directors of the Prospecting Association a letter was read from a prospecting party at Tuhutua to the effect that they had arrived within eight miles of Tnbua's lands and were waiting the arrival of Ngatia to enable them to go through. A resolution was passed to urge the Native Miuister to use hi 3 influence with Ngatia, Tamatu, and other chiefs on behalf of the party, as they were going up in compliance with a request of the natives. It was also decided to request the Minister of Mines to grant £ for £ subsidy to the company to enable prospectioci operations to be carried on.
