STOPPAGE OF THE GREYMOUTH HARBOR WORKS.
In the course of yesterday afternoon we (Argus) received the following telegram from a member of the deputation :
Wellington, May 9. "We have just had our final interview with the Premier with respect to the stoppage of the harbor works, and the result is that he absolutely declined to proceed with them any further at present, beyond doing what is necessary to leave them in a state of safety. He said that a number of men are still employed on the works, and that before they are put in a secure condition an additional thousand pounds will be expended on them from the date of stoppage. The Premier states that he ia and has always been in favor of prosecutiug the Greymouth harbor works; but lie contends that, including the wharf contracts, £25,000 out of, the £45,000 voted had been expended, being fully the aveeage of what has been expended in other districts. In respect to the Nelson Creek Railway, the Premier says that Government would still carry out the instructions of Parliament if the tender was let before the end of July. My own opinion on the matter, however, is that there is not the slightest probability of the work being done.
