Owing to the great amount of uneasiness, uncertainty, and dissatisfaction that prevails in reference to tlie fate of the prisoner Donohue, on whom the final sentence of the law has been pronounced now two months for the murder of James GifFord, the Visiting Justices of the Hokitika Gaol yesterday telegraphed to the Minister of Justice at Wellington as follows :—" What is to be the fate of the prisoner Donohue 1 Grave responsibility rests in keeping him in suspense. It is now over two months since trial and sentence of death passed." To this the Hon. Thos. Dick, for the Minister' of Justice, replied last evening to R J. Seddon, Esq., Visiting Justice, as follows :—" Delay unavoidable. Will be settled in a few days." The Pacific mail steamer Zealandia, with the English, European and American mails via San Francisco, arrived at Auckland at half-past seven o'clock on Sunday evening, one day behind timetable date. The real author of the libel for which Yates, an editor, was sent to gaol, was Lady Slradbrokc, a relative of Earl Lonsdale. There was a stirrhi" scene at the annual meeting of the Canard Atlantic Steamship Company ; there was no dividend declared. In the University j front iw.\ Oxford at last went to pieces. ! The ordinary meeting of the Hospital Committee will take place in the Town Hall at eight o'clock this evening. At the Resident Magistrate's Court this morning, before R. J. Seddon and D. Hannan, Esqs., J.Ps., Donald M'Calluni was charged with being drunk and disorderly, and, being convicted, was fined £l, and 2s, or 24 hours in Hokitika Gaol. On a second charge of resisting and assaulting the police, he was convicted and fined £2, with costs 2s, or 14 days in the same pententiary. The fines were paid. His Worship the Mayor requests the members of the Borough Council and Fire Brigade to meet at the Fire Brigade Station at 8 o'clock to-morrow (Wednesday) evening, for the purpose of handing over to the Brigade the new engine and fire brigade plant.
Mr Joseph Klein, of Hokitika, while shooting ducks at Camel's Back, in discharging a revolver yesterday about two p.m., accidentally lodged a bullet from one of the chambers in his left hand. The Times says he walked through the bush seven miles, and struck the Ross road near Ogilvie's, where he was fortunate enough to find a gentleman returning from Ross in a trap. He arrived in town about seven o'clock, when Dr. MacCarthy after cutting down on the bullet, succeeded in extracting it from where it was lodged in the bone of the middle finger. The doctor thinks there will be no danger of losing the finger.
Persons desirous of investing in Robin Hood's Novelty and other consultations on the Queen'3 Birthday races should make immediate application for tickets, as the lists close very shortly. The West Coast Times says :—" It is understood that an information under criminal jurisdiction, is about to be laid against the publisher of the Hokitika Star."
Commander Edwin yesterday wired urgent as follows :—" There are indications of the glass falling again after 12 hours, with strong winds from between the north-east and north and west, with increasing northerly sea."
A fishing party at Nelson a few days ago caught over a ton of fish in a few hours, comprising—schnapper, kahawhai, conger eel, and rock cod, and a lordly hapuka 901 b. weight. Milk in Sydney, in consequence of the drought, is selling at 8d per quart, whilst vegetables from the same cause are very dear.
