LOCAL SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

The adjourned meeting of the Local School Committee was held in the Town Hall on Monday evening; present— Mr Seddon (Chairman), Messrs F. Barrowman, Burger, Cain, Campbell (Hon. Sec), and Voysey. The inward correspondence was re l ceived aud considered. teachers' salaries. The following letter from the Secretary for Education was read : A. C. Campbelt,, Esq., Secretary, School Committee, Kumara. Sir—l have the honour, by direction of the Minister of Education, to acknowledge the receipt of your letters of Ist and 4th March, and to say that it is impossible for the Government to sanction any outlay on teachers' salaries beyond the amounts that were payable on the 31st December, 1883, the money at the disposal of the Government being insufficient to cover any additional expenditure. There would be no objection to Mr Wylde remaining for the present at the same rate of salary he was receiving in December last. I am also to say that it is impossible for Government to incur any expenditure on school buildings. I have the honor to be, Sir, Your obedient servant, John Hislop. Education Department, Wellington, April 3rd, 1884. It was resolved that the Secretary for Education be informed that the Committee regret that the Government will not assist them in carrying on in an efficient manner school matters in their district. ASSISTANT TEACHER. Two letters dated 15th April, were read from Mr R. E. Wylde—one stating that he had been offered and had accepted the position of master of the Gillespie's Beach school, tendering his resignation, and askin» to be allowed to leave the Kumara school at the end of the month; the other asking the Committee to use their endeavours to procure him the salary due to him for November, January, February, and March, in all .£25. Mr Wylde's resignation was accepted, and it was resolved that he be recommended for the -appointment of assistant teacher in the Kumara school, in place of Mr F. Tyrer who had resigned, subject to the approval of Inspector Smith. It was also resolved that the Educational Department be written to in the matter of Mr Wylde's salary, and requested to forward the same at once. PUPIL TEACHERS. On the recommendation of the head master (Mr J. Woodward) Miss Ingall and Miss M. Hoaking were appointed pupil teachers. RANGIRIRI SCHOOL PRIZES. The Chairman and any members of the Committee who find it convenient were deputed, to visit, the Riin&a'U'i

School on Saturday first, and distribute prizes to the children. BALANCE SHEETS. It was resolved that the balancesheets of the School Committee, read at the public meeting be passed, and that Mr E. T. Robinson be thanked for auditing the same. ADDITIONAL PRIZES. It was resolved that prizes be given to those children in the Kumara School who names appeared in the printed, list as having equal marks with the prize-takers, and who were omitted at the time. FINANCIAL. The following resolutions were passed : " That the sum of £ll 2s 7d, beiug half of the last quarter of 1883 due to the Committee, and received in the present year, be inserted in the minutes." " That inasmuch as the amount grauted by the Government to the Committee is not sufficient to defray the cost of cleaning the school, and for fuel, that during the winter months or until Education matters are put on a proper footing the Committee are reluctantly compelled to again adopt the old regulations, and charge the pupils for requisites." " That the Secretary of the Literary Society be written to asking the assistance of the society to give Penny Readings in aid of the funds for procuring fuel." " That the sum of 18s 9d be passed for payment to Mrs Pascoe, being the half of grant for the quarter ending 31st March." The opening and acceptation of tenders for firewood concluded the business of the meeting.
