We acknowledge receipt from the County Clerk of a copy of the electoral rolls for the County of Westland for the year 1884-85, and which are now open for inspection at the County Council Chambers, Hokitika, and also, for the Arahura Riding, at the various places set forth in an advertisement in another column. In several instances persons of the same name appear on the rolls. In compiling the rolls, these names have to be all entered ; but should it turn out that the same person has taken out several miners’ rights in this or any other same riding, such person can only exercise one vote in such riding, although his name may appear more than once on the roll. The rolls can be seen at the places mentioned in the advertisement, until the 15th May next, and any person claiming to be entered as a voter can apply to the nearest R.M. Court up to that date. On Saturday last a sou of Mr Fitzsimmons, of Hokitika, a boy about nine years of age, attempting to climb on the back of a coach passing through Hampden street to the races, foil to the ground and (the Times states) immediately was run over by a coach returning from there, the wheels of which passed over his body. He was conveyed home as quickly as possible, and Dr. Tivy being sent for shortly arrived, who upon examination found ho had sustained a dislocation of the thigh at the hip joint with other severe bruises. The bone having been safely replaced, the boy is now doing well. He completely recovered during his brief sojourn in Melbourne, and was enabled before leaving the city to enter heartily into the social enjoyments of the period. A fire occurred at three o’clock yesterday morning, in the shop occupied by the Singer Sewing Machine Company, in Revell street, Hokitika ; but, through the prompt measures adopted by Mr Nelas, the local agent for the company, and who was sleeping on the premises, the fire was quickly extinguished, without much damage being done. The Fidelity Company’s annual programme on the Queen’s Birthday Handicap at Dunedin is now published, and will be found on the next page. At the request of a large number of constant and valued subscribers, the company has been induced to adopt the 10s subscription. Letter stealing in London is being extensively carried on.
