GENERAL GORDON AND AN ASSISTANT GOVERNOR. (Received April 17, 10 p.m.) London, April 17. A letter in reference to the recent death of the Duke of Albany has been addressed by the Queen to Sir William Yernon-Harcourt, in the course of which her Majesty thanks all her sub. jects for their loyal sympathy in her bereavement, and states that, despite her deep sorrow at the death of Prince Leopold, she will continue to labour for the good of her country and for the prosperity of her people. (Received April 18, 1.30 p.m.) Evening. Her Majesty the Queen has arrived safely at Darmstadt. Calcutta, April 17. Telegrams are to hand from Rangoon reporting that a most disastrous fire has occurred there, a tremendous loss of property having resulted. Cairo, April 17. Intelligence has been received from Khartoum that General Gordon decided to appoint Zebehr Pasha to the position of Assistant-Governor of Soudan, but Zebehr declined to accept the post.
