A large number of visitors proceeded from Kumara to Hokitika, no less than 40 out of about 60 passengers thither being driven by Mr Morse in Mr John Cameron’s “Jack” coach, by seven horses. The results of the various events were as follow : TRIAL STAKES. Marie Stuart ... ... 1 Dan 2 Parnell ... 3 HOKITIKA HANDICAP. Lady Grey ... ... 1 Lady Harris ... ... 2 Happy Jack 3 This was a splendid race. Happy Jack sprung off with the lead which he retained for over a mile and a half. Coming into the straight there was a struggle for first place, Lady Grey winning under the whip, Lady Harris coming fast up and passing Happy Jack on the post, Totalisator, £384; dividend £9 18s. HURDLE RACE. Mustard... ... ... 1 Levant ... ... ... 2 This was a good race between Levant and Mustard, the top weight showing good pace, but Mustard proved an old hand at the game, and won easily. Totalisator, £219; dividend not declared, as a protest was entered by Levant’s owner against Mustard, on the ground that Mustard had been entered in a false name. SELLING RACE, Maggie ... ... ... 1 Fritter ... ... ... 2 Catesby broke a blood vessel soon after starting, and the race soon developed into a match between Fritter and Maggie, the latter winning comfortably.
