THE HOSPITAL FETE.

The Kumara Hospital grand Easter fete takes place to-day (Easter Monday). At a very early hour this morning several of the Committee, and with them some good volunteer woi’kmeu whose services they had enlisted were busy completing the erection of the booths, platform for the Band, stall for the gifts of fancy goods and curiosities, and the stage for dancing, which they had previously been engaged at. The Merry-go-round was also put up early this morning; and the scene was one of general activity. Goods of every conceivable description were being conveyed to the ground. Messrs Nicholson and Eairbairn have given the use of timber for these purposes, Messrs Davidson Bros, the use of galvanised iron; Mr Mulvihill has lent his booth; and Mrs Rugg has given the use of the Merry-go-round.

Since onr last notice contributions and donations for the fancy goods and curiosity stall have been largely augmented. These we shall notice more fully at another time. Donations in flowers were also sent in to-day. Mr Martin Kennedy, of Greymouth, has forwarded a donation of £2 2s, and Messrs Pizzey and Co., brewers, of Hokitika, have fowarded a 10-gallon cask of beer. The Volunteers turned out well this morning, and, accompanied by a large number of Foresters, and headed by the Catholic Brass Band and ColorSergeant Surasion, and marshalled by Captain o‘Hagan, arrived in tovn from Dillman’s on their way to the Recreation Ground at about 11 o’clock. The following are the acceptances for the handicap foot race, four events, which takes place in the Recreation Ground this afternoon : 100 200 r< 3oo 440 H. Greenwood scr. scr. scr. scr. F. Keller 8 11 16 20 Although Tyrer has accepted, he left for Greymouth yesterday afternoon to compete at the sports there, for which he had previously entered. This evening the concert and ball will be held in the Theatre Royal, and there is every prospect of a really good entertainment. The two front seats are to be reserved for the Brass Band. The String Baud also will be present, a large number of vocalists and instrumentalists give their services. The doors will be opened at half-past seven; and the entertainment will commence at eight o’clock. After this the Ball will be held. All the Booths and the Stalls are under the sole management of the Fete Committee, and the entire proceeds of the same will be devoted to the Kumara Hospital funds; and we may safely predict a very handsome amount being realised over the few necessary expenses which cannot be avoided.
