John Bright is suffering from slight congestion of the lungs. In the House of Commons to-day the Marquis of Hartington, in reply to a question, stated it is not intended to send British troops to Berber or Khartoum ; but if General Gordon proved to be in jeopardy, Government would order measures to be taken for his assistance. The Minister added that in his dispatches General Gordon announced that he adhered to his views in favor of the evacuation of Souakim. The body of the late Duke of Albany reached Portsmouth to-day. (Received April 7, noon.) April 5. The body of his late Royal Highness the Duke of Albany was entombed to-day in the Mausoleum at Frogmore, Windsor. Her Majesty the Queen and various members of the Royal Family attended the ceremony, which was of a most solemn and" imposing character. Among the wreaths placed on the Prince's coffin was one forwarded by tbe Agents-General on behalf of the colonies.

Further parleying which has been proceeding between the representatives of England and Spain with a view to the conclusion of a fresh commercial treaty has proved fruitless, and the negotiations have now ceased. Telegrams are to hand announcing that the steamship Daniel Steenmann, 1790 tons, from Antwerp, became a total wreck on the coast of Nova Scotia and one hundred and twenty persons have been drowned. Sir Henry Brougham Loch, K.C.8., for many years Lieutenant-Governor of the Isle of Man, previously connected with the British Embassy to China, and at present one of her Majesty's Commissioners for Woods and Forests, has been appointed Governor of Victoria. April 1. Sir Henry Loch will probably sail for Melbourne in June. A company is projected here with a capital of half a million, to purchase Mr Fisher's properties at Darling Downs, Queensland. It has transpired that H.R.H. the Duke of Albany was willing to have accepted the Governorship of Victoria, but that her Majesty forbade his doing so.

April 2. The Committee of the French Senate recommend, with regard to the Recidivate Bill, that the place to which prisoners my be deported should not be mentioned, and should be left to the Government for the time being. At the Liverpool Meeting, the Grand National Steeplechase Handicap, of 1000 guiueas, was won by Voluptuary, Frigate second, and Roquefort third. The New Zealand Shipping Company has received the following cablegram:— Aorangi, s.s., sailed from Plymouth at 7 p.m., 29th March. Feustanton, s.s., arrived, all well, at Monte Video. Refrigerator working well, but passage has been lengthened owing to heavy weather. The British Queen arrived at Rio on March 31 ; the Fenstanton at Rio on April 2; Doric, at Madeira, on April 1.
