In the manslaughter case against Dr. Parry, of Kaitangata, Mr Haggitt, in .opening the case, said that if ordinary care had been exercised by the prisoner the accident could not possibly have happened. NEW ZEALAND CUSTOMS REVENUE RETURNS. Wellington', April 2. The Customs returns for the financial year ending, 31st March have now been made up. The total amount' collected throughout the colony of New Zealand for the year is .£1,398,951 lis lOd, leaving a deficiency on the Colonial Treasurer's estimate of £121,048 8s 2d. The beer duty for the year amounted to £56,979 14s 9d, leaving a deficiency of £5202 5s 3d on Treasurer's estimate. The Customs revenue collected in the colony last month was £115,816 0s 3d, as against £125,117 7s Id, for the corresponding month last year. The amounts from principal ports last month were : Auckland, £25,021 3s 2d; Wellington, £20,585 ; Lyttelton and Christchurch, £16,435 9s lid; Dunedin, £28,869 lis 4d. The beer duty for the last month was £4740 9s 4d, as against £5669 14s 4d for March 1883. The following are the details of the Customs revenue collected in the colony last quarter.
