It is announced that Sir Henry Brougham Loch, K.C.8., formerly Governor of the Isle of Man, has been appointed Governor of Victoria, vice Lord Norraanby. The funeral of the late Duke of Albany will take place at St. George's Chapel, Windsor, on Saturday next. Messages to the Queen, conveying the condolence of Parliament in the death of Prince Leopold passed both Houses to-day. The annual inter-University boat race lakes place on the Thames on Monday next. |

Serions riots have occurred at Cincinnati through an immense mob of indignant citizens at the leniency of a verdict returned against a prisoner who was being tried on a charge of murder. They attacked and burned the prison in which the convict was placed. A force of United States troops was called out to protect the prison, and a serious conflict ensued between the military and the rioters, who exhibited desperate courage and refused to yield until a large number had been shot down. Fully 100 persons were killed, and 300 are suffering from wounds of a serious nature. Tne erneute has caused much excitement and alarm throughout the city and in the neighbourhood. (Received April 1 2.30 p.m) March 31. A force of 3000 troops is now in Cincinnati, with the object of preventing further rioting. The town continues in a very excited state. Capetown, March 31. News is to hand that tribal hostilities bave broken out in Basutoland and Zululand, and heavy fighting is proceeding over a large area in both countries. ♦ [SPECIAL TO MELBOURNE AGE.] London, March 18. The rumor is still beiug persistently circulated that Mr Gladstone intends to resign his position as Prime Minister, and dissolve Parliament. It is rumored that Major-General Scratchley is to be appointed Her Majesty's High Commissioner for the Western Pacific, in succession to Sir Arthur Gordon, who retired last NoI vember.
