[united press association.] Nelson, March 29. At half-past twelve this morning a fire broke out in a" three-roomed cottage in Brook street, and before the fire brigade reached the spot the place was in ashes. The building was insured in the Sun for £SO, and the furniture in the Standard for £IOO. A man named R. Skilton was found drowned ou a mud flat this morning. He was last seen at half-past ten last night, and it is suppoeed that he fell over the breastwork at high water. He leaves a wife and three children. Christchurch, March 29. Yesterday afternoon a man named William Sintoott was killed at Lincoln through falling from a threshing machine. His neck was broken. Auckland, March 29. A meeting of natives to bid farewell to Tawhiao was held at Mercer yesterday. Topia of Wanganui gave £IOOO and Poki of Tarauaki, £IOO to Tawhiao towards the expenses of the mission. Most of the natives followed Tawhiao's example and now wear blue ribbon. The Herald correspondent writes that gold has been discovered at Whangapa.
