means of driving him from politics. They feel certain of weakening his position as a candidate for the leadership of the Tories. Society is waiting anxiously for the trial. Lord and and Lady Cairns will enter the witnessbox. Garmoyle's letter to his ' blueeyed darling' will be read. Public opinion regards him with contempt. He has gone abroad, and his name has been withdrawn from the books of the clubs. Miss Fortescne is not making capital out of the incident, and the report that she will follow np the trial by a starring tour in America is unfounded. On the contrary, she has ■written a prettily-worded letter, saying she regards the affair with the utmost pain. Miss Fortescue's lawyer has said : ' Promise and breach are incontestible; so, also, are the parents' ratification and consent to the wedding preparations.' Lord Cairns' letters admit plaintiff's reputation to be unblemished. The persuasions of his mother, whom he claims is suffering from heart disease, and says that the marriage would kill her, is the cause of the breach. No love letters could be more tender and respectful than Garmoyle's. Damages are laid at £50,000, Upon coming of age two years ago, Garmoyle received, by will, £70,000.
