THE NEW ROAD TO MIGNONETTE FLAT.

[to the editor.] Sir—At a recent meeting of the County Council a petition was presented by Mr Seddon on behalf of the residents of Mignonette Flat, praying that the Council would connect the end of the present road with Kumara, so as to provide a shorter and more convenient route to their homes and claims, than the one at present in existence. There is no denyin» a shorter road is most urgently needed, especially for children attending school. It is simply absurd to expect people to travel nearly three miles when a third of the distance would bring them to the same point. Now, I find th.ifc the business people of Dillman's are getting a petition signed, which, though not exactly a counter one, is still likely to delay the construction of the road asked for. Petitioners No. 2 complain that this proposed new track would have the effect of diverting the which has hitherto existed between the residents of Mignonette Flat and Dillman's, and ask that a road should be made in another direction which would have the effect of preserving that tnulf and of accommodating the Mignonette Flat people as well. If I his is the case tfyulcl it uoti he .ji liio promoters

of these two petitions to have a meeting and consider whether the line of road proposed by petitioners No. 2 could be so laid off as to meet the wishes of all concerned ? If this course ■were adopted and an amicable understanding arrived at, the former petition could be withdrawn and No. 2 made a joint affair signed by all interested.— Yours truly, Mediator. Dillman's March 7, 1884.
