SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
A special 111 rcting of the Kumara Local School Committee was hold in the Town Hull last evening; paesenc—
Mr R. J. Seddon (Chairman), Messrs Burger, Cain, F. Barrowman, and Campbell (Hon. Sec.). Two letters from the Kumara and Dillman’s Town Brass Band Committee were read and received. One requested that the School Committee would assist in raising funds necessary to carry out the forming of a pubic Band by allowing an entrance fee of one shilling at the distribution of school prizes. The other stated—that should the Kumara Local School Committee be in favour of the Kumara and Dill man’s Brass Band, that this Committee would suggest to the Kumara Local School Committee to ask the Catholic Brass Band to play from Dillman’s Town to the Public School and through the town to the Theatre Royal on the occcasion of the distribution of prizes. It was resolved that the public distribution of prizes in connection with the Kumara State School take place in the Theatre Royal on Friday, the 29th February, at 7.30 p.m.; that no charge be made for admission \ but that the Committee recommend that donations be asked from those present who are willing to assist in forming the Brass Band, to be called the “ Kumara and Dillman’s Town Brass Band.”
The annual report and balance-sheet were appointed to be read at a meeting of the Committee to be held on Wednesday, the 27th inst. In reply to a request from Mr W. Nicholson that some other person might be appointed to audit the accounts and books of the School Committee, with Mr Pearson, it was resolved that Mr Nicholson’s resignation be accepted, and that Mr Dove be asked along with Mr Pearson to audit the Committee’s accounts.
It was resolved that the String Band be written to and asked to give their services in the Theatre on the night of the distribution of prizes; that Mr David Williams be requested to give his assistance ; and that Mrs Williams and Mr A. Miller be asked to play during the evening. The Chairman and Mr Woodward were authorised to draw up a programme of the entertainment on the night of the distribution of prizes; and it was resolved that the Catholic Brass Band be written to and asked to play from Dillman’s and through Kumara to the Theatre Royal on the night of the distribution of school prizes. The Secretary was instructed to inform the Kumara and Dillraan’s Brass Band Committee that there would be no charge for admission, but that a collection would be made in aid of the Band during the evening from those willing to contribute for that purpose. With regard to the distribution of prizes, it was resolved that certificates of merit be given some of the children in each standard wha receive no prize, and that Mr Woodward be asked' to give special reasons in each case. Messrs Scddon, Barrowmau, and Campbell were appointed to draw up the annual report of the School Committee for the past year. The meeting then adjourned till tomorrow week, at 8 p.m.
