[united press association,] Dunedin, February 16. The Tasmanians in their first innings made 139; Otago in their first 116. The game was drawn. In the match Woods v. Hulston, for £IOO a side, Hulston won the 100 yards by one yard in 10 seconds, but in the 400 yards event, Hulston was quickly left behind by Woods and threw up the sponge at 100 yards. Woods also easily wou the 200 yards event.
Christchurch, February 16, The Caledonian sports were attended by 2000. In border wrestling Hudson was first, G. Robertson second, and Dinnie third. In Scotch wrestling Dinnie easily threw Matheson, and Robertson and Dinnie resulted in the latter being thrown, Robertson, however, being so much exhausted and slightly strained, that by medical advice he had to abandon further trial, Dinnie won the Highland fling and threw the I6B). hammer 115 ft. 2in., but was beaten by Wright, who threw it 85ft. 1 Clinches, but had a handicap of 38ft. Dinnie was the only competitor able to toss the caber. Auckland, February 15. Mr G. N. Griffin, American-Consul, departs on a visit to the South Island. His business is chiefly on matters connected with the sailing vessel Sarah W. Hunt, at Lyttelton, but he also proceeds to Dunedin on Consular business. It is understood Sir George Grey has expressed an opinion adverse to Tawhiao’s mission to England, and that his opinion has been communicated to Tawhiao. February 16, Sheehan has been on a visit to Grey at Kawau. Sheehan has definitely announced his intention to stand for Napier at next election. At the inquest on Morgan the evidence showed the cause to be jealousy about his betrothed flirting, and the verdict was “ temporary insanity.” Wellington, February 16. Government have purchased 132 acres at Porirua, about fifteen miles from town, on the West Coast railway line, as a site for a new Lunatic A.sylum, the sum of £2750 having been voted for the purpose last session. Inspector Graham considers the site exceptionally suitable. It is intended to erect temporary premises, and draft out there from the Mount View Asylum, now much overcrowded, a number of the most capable patients to work at the erection of the permanent building. Dr. King, superintendent of Mount View, having accepted an appointment at Hokitika, and Dr, Gillon, who has been acting as visiting superintendent for some time, being unable to continue owing to the demands of private practice, the appointment has been conferred on Dr. Levinge, late surgeon of the steamer Doric.
