WESTLAND COUNTY COUNCIL.

The following is a continuation of the report of the proceedings of the County Council on Wednesday : VEHICLE LICENSES. Mr Rose moved, " That Mr Dale be appointed Inspector of Vehicles, and Pedlars and Hawkers Licenses in outlying districts, and that the Rate Books for 1883 and 1884 be given to him as soon a 8 possible." He had no doubt that it was outside of the overseers' work to challenge persons for licenses. An inspector was necessary.—Mr dimming seconded. He looked upon Mr Dale as a permanent officer of the Council.— Mr Seddon moved an amendment that the Secretary be requested to rereport upon this matter. He also insinuated that the mover and seconder were afraid that Mr Dale might be an opponent of theirs at the next election. The Chairman seconded the amendment. The appointment ought to be held over for another month.—Mr Jack saw no difficulty in making the appointment. He could not understand why this opposition came from the north. He had much pleasure in supporting the resolution.—Mr Grimmond would support the motion although that gentleman never supported a motion of his. Mr Dale was the proper officer to do this work, although he was averse to inflict these by-laws on the community. Mr Hirter supported the motion, as did also Mr M'Goldrick.—The amendment was lost on a division, the Chairman, Messrs Seddon, and M'Whirter alone voting in its favour.—The motion was then curried.

WAIMEA CREEK BRIDGE. The Chairman moved, "That the County Engineer be instructed to erect a foot-bridge over the R.H.B. of the "Waimea Creek leading from the end of M'Maaters street, Goldsborough, cost not to exceed £ls."—Carried. THE TIFFIN BORER. The Chairman moved, " That the Public Works Committee report at an early date on the best method of utilising the Tiffin boring machine."—Mr Gumming thought it was a pity to see the machine lying idle.—Motion carried. SCHEDULE OF WORKS. The Chairman moved, "That the Public Works Committee meet at an early date to draw up a schedule of works for the recognition of Government and to be constructed for "the year 1884."—The motion was an important one, for the Inspector of Mines had already asked for it on behalf of the Government.—The motion was carried without dissent. GREENSTONE ROAD. Mr M'Whirter moved, "That tenders be invited by next meeting for widening half a mile of the Greenstone road, end of the track from Duffer's Creek, Greenstone road, to the 15-mile peg, Christchurch road, into a dray road."—Carried. PIPER'S FLAT TRACK. The Chairman moved, "That the Road Overseer receive instructions to have put in proper repair the track, leading from Piper's Flat bridge, to the beach."—Carried. MISCELLANEOUS. Resolutions were passed voting £lO for the repair of Totara track; that the unconstructed portion of the road from Kumara to the Ocean Beach be placed undr the vote for tracks in goldfields; that Mr Kerr be instructed to get the necessary repairs done to the bridge over the Waimea Creek, Stafford; also that the track to Neilsen's farm, Wanganui, be left in the hands of Mr Butler.
