The Kumara Times. Published Every Evening. FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 15, 1884.

The defeat and massacre of Egyptian troops on three separate occasions seems to have convinced the authorities that they are not to be relied upon when brought face to face with the rebel Arabs of Soudan ; and accordingly we find that one of our latest cablegrams to-day from Cairo states that the dispatch of a brigade of Egyptian troops, which was under orders to proceed to Assouau, with the view of checking any advance of the lvbels into Egypt Proper, has been abandoned, and British troops will probably be employed. At present, however, the operations of the British army, about to proceed by steamers to Souakim, will be directed to the relief of the garrisons at Tokar, Atbara, Assoor, and other towns on the way to Berber and [C!i;u-fo;u:>, !!».> l.i-'t-iKMiiOil being nearly 500 miles from oouukim.

The official notification of the result of the polling on Wednesday at Greenstone and Westbrook for the election of the Licensing Committee for the Hohonu Licensing District is published elsewhere. It is also announced that the Court House Greenstone, and Saturday, the 23rd inst., at 2 p.m. are appointed as the place and day for the said committee to elect their Chairman. The poll for the election of five dulyqualified persons to constitute the Licensing Committee for the Licensing District of Arahura will take place to-morrow, Saturday, between the hours of 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. The polling places are at a booth at Dillman's Town, and at the Court Houses at Goldsborough and Stafford. We are pleased to learn from Dr. Monckton, Resident Acting Surgeon to the Kumara Hospital, that Alfred Yortt, the boy who lately sustained such severe injuries by exploding a dynamite cap, is now likely to recover the sight of the left eye. Up to yesterday there were very little hopes of this being effected, but a favourable change has since taken place, with the result that the sight of both eyes is likely to be eventually restored. Captain Edwin wired yesterday to expect bad weather from any direction between north-east and north and west; glass falling again soon, and sea heavy after twelve hours. Mr Rolleston is to visit Nelson during the first week in March. Mr H. A. Gordon, Inspecting Engineer of Roads, Water-races and Mining Claims, has been engaged on a professional visit in this district for some days past. The Times reports that "he visited the Humphrey's Gully Company's ground yesterday, and the coal workings on Wednesday. He proceeds to Ross to-day, and on Saturday will devote his attention to the requirements of the County Council in the way of tracks to be subsidised by the Government. The Public Works Committee of the County Council meet to-day at noon, to consider a schedule of works to present to the Government, in order that Mr Gordon may report on the same." On Wednesday afternoon a friendly cricket match was played in the Camp Reserve, Greymouth, between an eleven from the Circus Troupe and an equal number from Grey Club. The latter team (in one innings put together 92 runs, while the former (in no less than three innings) scored but 39—4 the first innings, 17 the second, and 18 the third. The Tasmanian cricketers wanted £IOO to play two days at Nelson. The English Eleven were content to accept a guarantee of £6O. Mr T. Thomas, of Dillman's, being about to make an excursion to the old country, offers for sale his express coach, two good staunch horses, and all the single and double harness suitable for the same.
