G-.M.—Mars is the only one of the superior planets whose distance from the Earth at any time is less than the Earth's distance (92,000,000 miles) from the Sun. By superior planets is meant those planets whose orbits are outside that of the Earth's from the Sun. The following are the relative distances of all the known superior planets in Miles from the Sun. Mars 145,000,000 Minor planets (230) varying from 209,000,000 miles to 330,000,000 Jupiter 496,000,000 Saturn ... 910,000,000 Uranus 1,829,000,000 Neptune 2,864,000,000 If now you subtract the Earth's distance from the Sun from that of Jupiter's you have 406,000,000 as the nearest approach the Earth can make to Jupiter, which is more than eight times the Earth's distance from the Sun. Jupiter performs a revolution round the Sun in 12 years, Neptune in 164 i.
