[REUTER’S TELEGRAMS.] By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. THOMAS AND SONS’ DEFALCATIONS. THE HURRICANE IN NORTH QUEENSLAND. (Received February 4, 0.50 a.m.) Melbourne, February 2. The Melbourne Office of the Loudon Chartered Bank of Australia states that according to London advices the bank’s losses by the defalcations of Thomas and Sons will not exceed £90,000 —more than is covered by the reserve fund, which is invested in consols apart from ordinary business. (Received February 4, 12.30 p. m.) Brisbane, February 4. It has been ascertained that no loss of life occurred from the hurricane recently experienced in North Poole Island. The freezing works near Bowen were completely destroyed, and it is feared there has been a wreck on Gloucester Island, off Edgecumbe Bay.
The storm had a most extensive front, and serious floods are reported in many parts of Northern Queensland. Hundreds of persons at Bowen are in a state of destitution.
