It is announced that Baron Macleay, the New Guinea explorer, will return to New Guinea at an early date. (Received January 22, 1 p.m.) Bishop Moran, of Ossory, Ireland, the newly-appointed Ai'chbishop of Sydney, has been summoned by the Pope to Rome, where he will be appointed a Cardinal prior to his departure for Sydney. "William Holmes, the Liberal M.P. for Paisley, which he has represented since January 1874, has resigned his seat in the House of Commons. It is announced that H.M.S. Carysfort, one of the vessels of the Mediterranean Squadron, has been ordered to Suez, whence she will convey Colonel Gordon (Gordon Pasha) to Suakim, in the Red Sea, on bis special mission to Soudau. (Received January 22, 1.5 a.m.) Cairo, January 20. Communication by telegraph with Khartoum was restored to-day, but no intelligence of importance has been received here from Soudan. Vienna, January 20. M. De Giers, Russian Foreign Minister, is now on a visit to this city. His Excellency received a cordial welcome on his arrival, and fetes have been organised in his honor.
