The Kumara Times. Published Every Evening. TUESDAY, JANUARY 22, 1884.

Pursuant to notice given, J. Giles, Esq., Warden of this district, and H. A. Gordon, Esq., Inspector of Mines, opened a Court of Inquiry this morning at the Court House. Claimholders and parties interested in the working arrangements of the Kumara sludge-channel were invited to attend, and presented themselves in goodly numbers. Mr Hannan, who said lie represented the Committee of the Miners Association, applied for an adjournment till two o'clock, as the County Chairman was in correspondence with the Government relative to the appointment of another gentleman to sit on the inquiry ; ou account of the shortness of time, and because the miners were averse to Mr Gordon. Dr. Giles said he was sorry he could not consent to any application for adjournment; Mr Gordon and he were appointed by the Government; they had come specially to meet the miners; the miners were here, and it was with them they had to deal. The inquiry then proceeded. The evidence of Messrs William Morris and John White occupied the Court all morning till near one o'clock, when it was adjourned till 2 p.m. Our report is held over till to-morrow.

The ordinary meeting of the Hospital Committee will be held at the Town Hall this evening, at eight o'clock. Important business will be brought forward, and a full attendance is requested.

In consequence of the Miners Ball on Friday, Mr Willmott has decided to postpone the production of the new Irish drama "Eilleen Oge," at the Adelphi Theatre, till Monday next.

At the Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday afternoon, before J. Giles, Esq., R.M., C. H. Patterson was charged on the information of Sergeant Russell with being of unsound mind : and was convicted and committed to the Lunatic Asylum, Hokitika. Mr G. R. Rudkin announces the disposal of his grocery and general provision business to Messrs W. J. M'llroy and Co., aud while thanking the inhabitants of Kumara for the liberal support accorded to him, trusts his successors will meet with similar favours.

At the invitation of Messrs Girdwood, Lahman, and Co., Greymouth agents for the Black Diamond Line of steamers a number of gentlemen met in the cabin of the Mawhera, Grey River, yesterday morning, to wish success to Captain Johnston and his new vessel.

A correspondent at San Francisco wrtes :—" Hanlan remains to row a match with Stevenson, a local boatman, who has a great time record. Peterson, another local sculler, in an exhibition match at Mission Bay last Sunday, rowed away from Hanlan, who was not in good form. He goes into training. Hanlan lias a liicrli opinion of Stevenson, but thinks he does not know how to row."
