The Tarawera sailed to-day on an excursion to the West Coast Sounds. She took 28 passengers from Dnnedin, 5 from Oamaru, 9 from Christchurch, 4 from Wellington, 1 from Nelson, 9 from Auckland, 4 from Hohart, 30 from Melbourne, 8 from Sydney, and 1 from England. January 9. The murder case against Prince will probably come on to-morrow. D. M. Stuart will conduct the defence. Wellington, January 8. The cricket match Canterbury v. Wellington was finished this afternoon, Canterbury winning by 15 runs. The scores of the second innings were, Canterbury, 157 ; Wellington, 147. At the Supreme Court this morning, George Gedge pleaded guilty to a charge of horse-stealing and was remanded for sentence. The case of child murder against Kate Boyle occupied the court the whole day. At six the jury returned with a verdict of guilty, but while in a state of insanity. His Honor said that was tantamount to a verdict of not guilty. The foreman intimated the jury did not wish to entirely exonerate the prisoner, and they again retired to further consider their verdict. Later. At 10.15 to-nigbt, the jury in the child murder case" returned with a verdict of "Not Gnilty," with a plea of insanity. His Honor ordered the prisoner to be kept in strict custody until the Colonial Secretary's pleasure should be known. Alexander Anderson, on a charge of attempting to murder his paramour, Mary White, was found guilty, and sentenced to three years' hard labor. Auckland, January 8. At the Police Court this morning, Edwards the " ped " was charged with committing wilful and corrupt perjury by swearing in the Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday, that his signature to a cheque was a forgery. It was stated that a warrant, had been issued at Wellington for his arrest. The Court, however, decided that in the absence of a warrant they could not take action on the telegram, and so dismissed the case. Edwards sailed by the mail steamer for San Francisco in the afternoon.
