SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

The monthly meeting of the Kumara School Committee was held in the Town Hall on Monday evening; present— Mr Seddon (Chairman), Messrs Barrowman, Burger, Cain, and Campbell (Secretary). The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. The outward correspondence was read and approved of. The following circular from the Central Board of Education was read : - To the Chairman Kumara School Committee. Sir—Herewith please receive forms of Abstract of School Fund Accounts. Please oblige by giving your careful attention to the note at head of form, requiring the Return to be sent in, in duplicate, and giving other instructions. I send attached hereto a copy of circular received by the Board from the Education Department concerning the auditing of School Committee's accounts. In accordance with suggestions contained in the circular, I have been appointed by the Board to audit the accounts of school committees, and you will oblige by forwarding your cash book and vouchers and bank book if you have one (made up to Dec. 31st) to this office, as early in January as possible. A parcel addressed to the Secretary will come free of postage. Please not to include any payments on account of building and furniture made by the Board, the item "Repairs to Buildings, Fences, and Furniture," included in the form applying only to expenditure upon those items out of Committee's yearly grant. By forwarding the Return with your books, &c, early in January, you will enable me, supposing mistakes to occur, to send it back to you for correction and to receive it back from you by the time specified by the Act (103rd clause) viz., January 31st. It was resolved that the consideration of the circular from the Central Board stand over until such time as the question of Boards is settled. A printed circular from Mr H. R. Rae, Hokitika was read ; the following is a copy : To the Chairman Kumara Local School Committee. Sir—l purpose going to Wellington on Friday next, the 11th inst. to endeavor to get the Westland Sub-division Bill brought at once into law. To enable me to represent the School Committees of Westland, it would be advisable that a letter, under the hand of each Chairman, should be forwarded to me. The letter should be simply to the effect that Mr H. R. Rae is authorised to represent your Committee in Wellington. I am paying my owu expenses, so that no question of expenditure arises. I would thank you to send me the letter, on or before Thursday next, the 10th inst. ' I am, sir, Yours truly, H. R. Rae. Hokitika, January 3, 1884. It was resolved that Mr Rae's letter be received, and that the Chairman be authorised to give Mr Rae the consent of the Committee to his representing them at Wellington on school matter*-. The Secretary was instructed to request the teachers in the Kumara School district to send the Committee their accounts for salaries due against the Board, and that said accounts be sent to the Government at Wellington. The Secretary was also rtquested to prepare a balance-sheet, and submit the same to a meeting of the Committee to he held ou Monday next, 14th inst., at 8 p.m. It was resolved that Messrs Nicholson and Pearson be asked to audit the Committee's accounts. The Chairman reported that MiDraper had presented to the Committee for the use of the children attending the State School the swing boat which had been constructed for swiu«nn<r at the New Year's picnic. It was resolved that a vote of thanks be recorded to Mr Draper, and to Messrs Nicholson and Davidson for supplying the materials, and Mr Levit for labour in connection with the swine boat. s After passing an account for 15s, the meeting was adjourned till Monday next.
