The cargo, comprising 4000 carcases of frozen mutton, per Orient steamship Chimborazo, has been examined and found in good condition. A portion of the frozen mutton ex Teviotdale has been sold at an average of 5d per pound. January 6. The British Government, in reply to the note recently received from the Egyptian Government, in which the latter asked for English assistance in Soudan, has insisted that the Egyptian troops now at Khartoum should be withdrawn to the second cataract on the Nile. January 7. It has further transpired in connection with the reply to the Egyptian note that Government has stated that it is not opposed to dispatch a Turkish expedition to Soudan, provided the whole expense of such expedition be borne by Turkey. (Received January 8, 11.45 a.m.) The steamship Duke of Westminster, which recently went ashore on the Isle of Wight still lies stranded, and is in a most critical position. The cargo is being rapidly removed, with the view of the possibility of the vessel breaking up. Later, The steamship Duke of Westminster has been abandoned by her owners. (Received January 8, 1.25 a.m.) Cairo, January 6. The resignation of the Egyptian Government is believed to be probable, and it also stated that the Khedive is talking of abdicating. Brussels, January 5. It is announced that Gordon Pasha has been requested by King Leopold to proceed to the Congo River to take command of the Belgian expedition, and that he has agreed to the King’s request, and will leave at an early date. St. Petersburg, January 4. It is now known that the Czar did not, as alleged, meet with an accident last month while out hunting, but that he was injured by a Nihilist attempt on his life, and has since been confined to his Palace.
