The Kumara Times. Published Every Evening. TUESDAY, JANUARY 8, 1884.

In reply to the note recently received from Egypt, cablegrams to-day state that the British Government has insisted that the Egyptian troops now at Khartoum should be withdrawn to the second cataract on the Nile. The British Government is not opposed to the Porte sending an expedition to Soudan provided the whole expense be borne by Turkey. A cable message this morning states that the Czar did not, as alleged, meet with an accident whilst out hunting, but that he was injured by a Nihilist attempt on his life. He has since been confined to his Palace. The ordinary meeting of the Hospital Committee will be held in the Town Hall this evening, at eight o’clock. The business is likely to be of more than ordinary interest. A meeting of the Children’s New Year Picnic Committee is to be held in the Town Hall at seven o’clock this evening. It is elsewhere requested that particulars of accounts contracted by the Committee be sent in to the Hon. Secretary, Mr R. Toms, some time before that hour. The four men who were arrested at Maori Creek on Sunday for assaulting a Chinaman were brought up before Mr Nancarrow, at Greymouth, yesterday morning, and, on the application of Mr Kitchingham, who appeared for the accused, remanded till Monday next. The Union Company’s steamer Mahinapua left Wellington yesterday for the West Coast. She is due at Greymouth to-morrow, and will leave on Thursday off her return voyage. A meeting of the Committee of the Literary Institute was held on Saturday evening, when a good amount of business was gone through. Constable Quinn lost no time in visiting the scene of the murder at Maori Creek. He could not possibly have received the news of the murder before six o’clock on Sunday evening, and lie was at Maori Creek before midnight that day. The Greymouth cricketers were to take their departure to-day in the s.s. Murray, for Nelson, in order to play a match there. A Westport Hospital patient named Munroe, formerly an officer of the Celestia, barque, died on Sunday. He had suffered long and painfully from cancer. The Westport Times of the 4th inst. says : —“ It was stated in town last night, on the strength of a private letter from Mokihinui township, that gold had been struck eight miles from Specimen Creek. There is, as yet, no reliable news to hand, and as there are several trustworthy men at present in the locality, we would advise miners to await their reports.” We (Otago Daily Times) regret to have to make the announcement that Messrs Maclean and Co., auctioneers, Ac., have had to file their schedule in bankruptcy.
